About ONI

Every day, over two million commercial containers are transported on ships carrying goods between the world’s ports. This presents an immediate risk to national security and a long-term risk of proliferation of sensitive technologies should terrorists be able to smuggle weapons and other contraband in these shipping containers. Through solutions like Maritime Domain Awareness, the U.S. intelligence community can better collect, process, and analyze enormous quantities of data about the world’s containerized maritime shipments in order to identify and track high-interest shipments, activities, organizations, and individuals as well as identify potential threats as early as possible.
