Vienna, Va. – Matt Windham, NTELX’s Director of Analytics was interviewed by Data Informed for an article on the Certified Analytics Professional (CAPÔ) credential he recently received. Matt and sixteen other analytics professionals were the inaugural cohort to earn the credential.

The CAP program was launched by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) as a means of establishing professional standards for competence and ethics in the data analytics field. “I think this is an important element of building a culture of ethical behavior across the CAP community, and branding the CAP credential with high ethical standards” said Matt, who also offered his thoughts for making the program meaningful, including “professional education requirements for CAP holders that include a focus on ethics; stated code of ethics for INFORMS members; and raising awareness of ethics issues across INFORMS via workshops, publications, and classroom training.”

Subsidiary executes agreement to manage access to Iraq’s Seaports and Borders: Project will modernize Iraq’s ports, transport, and trade sectors.

Vienna, Va. – NTELX, Inc. announced that its Jordanian-based subsidiary, Nafith Logistics, has signed a concession agreement to provide a comprehensive system to manage truck access to Iraq’s seaports and border crossings. The system will organize the activities of Iraq’s ports, borders, terminals, truckers, freight agents, and government into an integrated solution designed to promote efficiency, productivity, and transparency.

Nafith will deploy its technology platform; build three truck marshaling yards, RFID and communications networks; and implement a new work flow design for accessing Iraq’s ports and border crossings. The project will begin operations later this year and will be operated by Nafith for ten years. The total capital investment is approximately US$13 million.

Nafith developed and operates a similar system in Aqaba, Jordan’s sole seaport. By minimizing truck waiting times, inland transportation costs have dropped by an estimated 20 percent. The port terminals are more efficient; chaos and confusion at terminal gates has been eliminated; and pollution, fuel consumption, and accidents have been reduced. The system won the 2009 award from the Intelligent Transportation Society of America for the best use of advanced technology in surface transportation.

“Nafith has proven that its cutting-edge approach to managing truck movements at ports, borders, and other congested points significantly increases infrastructure and truck productivity,” said Larry Kahn, Vice Chairman of Nafith and a member of NTELX’s board of directors. “For Iraq to meet its ambitious growth plans, an efficient transport sector is essential.”

Vienna, VA – Rob Quartel, Chairman and CEO of NTELX was interviewed by Bloomberg for a CBS feature on the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). The segment appeared on CBS’ Capitol Gains. Quartel discussed USTDA’s role in helping NTELX penetrate the Jordanian and foreign markets.

With the assistance of USTDA, NTELX developed, implemented, and continues to support a solution which has significantly improved traffic conditions around the port of Aqaba, Jordan’s sole seaport. In 2011, an independent assessment by Nathan Associates Inc. concluded that “the port access system cuts an estimated 14 hours from turnaround times for trucks transiting Aqaba. It saves time and money by reducing road congestion and improving turn times, terminal access, and reliability, all of which boost Jordan’s economy and create jobs. Additionally, the system reduces vehicle emissions and accidents, and generates transportation benefits for other users of the street and highway system.”

Vienna, VA – PREDICT, a solution designed, developed, and implemented by NTELX at the Food and Drug Administration was recently recognized in an article on American Shipper for its success in helping the Food and Drug Administration detect risky imports entering the country.

PREDICT is the only information-based risk-targeting solution used by the United States Government to screen regulated food, drugs, and medical device imports. Deployed at the nation’s seaports, land border crossings, and airports, PREDICT provides a risk score for every import under the jurisdiction of the FDA, giving the agency’s front-line inspectors the information they need to quickly and objectively decide which imports to inspect.

The article quoted acting principal deputy associate commissioner for regulatory affairs at FDA, Howard Sklamberg as saying: “The FDA this year has completed deployment of its web-based PREDICT system to all districts in the country that handle imports. PREDICT analyzes factors such as the potential for a drug to be illegally copied and the history of the firm to find patterns that might not be noticeable by looking at an individual entry document. It produces a score letting inspectors know whether to initiate an inspection or expedite low-risk shipments—if full and accurate data has been entered by the importer or its agent. It [PREDICT] replaces the admissibility screening function of OASIS, the FDA’s legacy system.”

Vienna, VA – NTELX, Inc., has been awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for innovative technology that uses data on seasonality to identify anomalies and target risks.

The method has applicability in a variety of domains such analysis of agricultural products, transportation activities, and commerce. Patent inventors include Dr. Lusine Yepremyan, a member of NTELX’s data analytics team, as well as former NTELX employees.

Products manufactured or shipped out-of-season can have a higher incidence of substandard quality or spoilage. NTELX has developed methods for identifying seasonality patterns; leveraging patterns identified to find anomalous transactions; and communicating analysis results for application in business processes and other systems. Most vegetables, food crops, fruits, and to a lesser extent, industrial products, show seasonality trends, which can be analyzed for anomaly detection.

“By recognizing and protecting this invention, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has confirmed that NTELX is driving real innovation in the solutions we deliver to our customers. We will continue to make investments in further differentiating our NXanalyzerÔ risk targeting technology,” said Dhiren Patel, NTELX’s President.

The risk targeting solutions for regulated imported products that NTELX provides to the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission can both utilize this patented method. Since its implementation, PREDICT, the FDA system built around NXanalyzer, has enabled the FDA to improve the detection of risky imports by one third while decreasing false positives, allowing FDA to more effectively deploy inspection resources, while also identify risky products before they enter US markets.

Vienna, Virginia – NTELX CEO Rob Quartel and Board Member Larry Kahn were invited by The Office of The United States Trade Representative in partnership with the Government of Pakistan to attend the 2012 US – Pakistan Business Opportunities Conference.

The event was held at the Citicorp, Stirling Square Carlton Gardens in London on October 4th through the 5th. It kicked off with a welcoming reception hosted by the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Louis B. Susman and concluded with a reception and remarks from the Pakistan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Wajid Shamsul Hasan.

NTELX received a grant from the US Trade and Development Agency in 2010 to develop a feasibility analysis to improve Pakistan’s inland freight transport starting at the Karachi container terminals. The study resulted in a proposed solution called PAWS (Port Access Workflow System), the goal of which has been to streamline operations that improve service for freight agents and cargo owners while decreasing congestion and pollution around the port.

The PAWS feasibility study leveraged NTELX’s experience in Aqaba, Jordan’s sole seaport, where the company, along with local partners, designed, developed, and operates under a public-private partnership agreement, an award-winning Truck Control System (TCS). TCS minimizes wait times by combining intelligent transportation applications that collect, validate, and share information with sophisticated routing and scheduling algorithms and near real-time visibility for users. The system has cut inland transport costs by 20%, while reducing chaos, taming congestion, and eliminating an estimated 5,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

Rob and Larry are shown in the photo below with Mr. Michael Delaney, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative, South and Central Asia, and H.E. Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.S.

Vienna, Va. – Business leaders, high-level public sector officials, and development partners gathered in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for the inaugural conference organized by the Borderless Alliance and the USAID West African Trade Hub.

The Alliance is an international donor supported platform that responds to the “urgent need for the private sector to rethink its role in advocating for freer movement of goods and services.” The USAID West Africa Trade Hub “has been both a prominent and behind-the-scenes player in igniting and encouraging economic growth in one of the world’s poorest regions. Partnering with firms, financial institutions, civil society, governments, donors and entrepreneurs, the Hub acts as an honest broker of deals, policy recommendations and organizational changes leading to real and sustainable reductions in poverty.”

Michael Ivenso of NTELX spoke to participants on the importance of realizing efficiencies in trade and transportation to address the many challenges confronting the region. Poor physical infrastructure, long transit times, and frequent road accidents cause delays in the movement of cargo, increase costs. Products and often do not comply with government and industry regulations, and performance measures are not widely available. Panelists discussed the impacts of these challenges on economic development in the region and reviewed strategies for overcoming them.

Mr. Ivenso walked participants through three key innovative concepts proven to significantly improve similar challenges in other regions around the world: Asset management, resource targeting, and trade automation. NTELX’s sophisticated Trade and Transport solutions, which include systems for freight traffic management and import risk targeting, have produced enormous gains in efficiency and accelerated trade at ports around the world.

An impact assessment conducted by Nathan Associates Inc., on the implementation of NTELX’s Truck Control System in Aqaba, Jordan’s sole seaport, concluded that the system has helped move trucks more quickly and efficiently resulting in an additional US$100 million annually to Jordan’s GNP. According to the assessment, trucking costs to and from inland points have dropped, port infrastructure has become more efficient and secure, and the impact of truck traffic on residential, tourist, and commercial neighborhoods has been minimized since the launch of the system back in 2006.
